Freewheeling synthlines meet Middle Eastern instrumentation and chopped angular African beats.

DEBRUIT + bAnd (FR)
A legendary musical collective from France brings together freewheeling synthlines, wobbly loops with Middle Eastern instrumentation, chopped, angular African beats, wild bass and some of the heaviest wonky fusions around. Mixing together the sound reminiscent of Congolese sound systems, downtown LA block parties gone wrong, haze filled Kingston recording studios, and Tunisian backstreet souks powered by a thick hip-hop engine.

SENSATIONAL (US/ WordSound/ Skam/ Matador)
Live hallucinogenic afro-psychedelic enigma, which is “underground hip-hops number one upstart-in-waiting” according to Time Out NY.

KOYXEи aka KOUHEI MATSUNAGA (JAP/ Mille Plateaux/ Raster Noton/ Flying Swimming)
A mindbending masterpiece of raw, bouncy and chest-caving beats, spectral textures, gruff, marble-mouthed self-aggrandizement and unparalleled grit.

DJ SCOTCH BONNET (aka DJ Scotch Egg/ JAP)
Swapping GameBoys and 8-bit limitation for a hefty distortion unit, Ishihara delves deep into the world of bass-driven hip-hop breaks, melding dense distorted beats with his signature pop sensibility and references Scorn, NHK, and the dance music culture of his new home-town, Berlin.

Performance beatbox extravaganza in Berlin.

Imagine you come to a show and realize midway through that you’re having a really strong trip. Reggie Watts’ intellectually stimulating hilariously clever improvised comedy beatbox performance does exactly this to the audiences. Buy the tickets for the show now before they’re sold out!

In his stream-of-consciousness monologues combined with beautifully mastered beatbox interludes, Reggie shifts seamlessly between different personas, musical styles, accents, voices, and even – yes – bodies. He may be speaking in British cockney to explain how many Xanax he has taken, or as a ghetto youth with extensive knowledge of economic theory (“this world be fucking crazy, when you be looking at some virtualized numbers that symbolize shit that don’t exist”). Whoever witnesses this hilarious psychotic maze, goes through a succession of mental orgasms accompanied by endless fits of laughter.

Hailed as the “man of towering genius” by Brian Eno and the “comic genius” by GQ, Reggie Watts also regularly performs as the opening act for the popular Conan O’Brien TV show in the US. He also contributed two tracks to DFA Records’ Spaghetti Circus and performed with dance-punk band LCD Soundsystem. Reggie regularly performs at PS122 in NY.

Reggie’s first ever show in Berlin will be supported by the amazing mysterious witchcraft genius locally-brewed music performance project that will carefully prepare your mind and your body for Reggie’s psychedelic mental trip and then will blow off whatever it is that is remaining.

Performance by Jeremy Wade, Ligia Manuela Lewis, Florentina Holzinger, Rodrigo Sobarzo

In “Fountain/To the Mountain”, the American choreographer Jeremy Wade creates a two-part performance that sends his audience on a physical trip. He amalgamates psychedelic and religious experiences into a grotesque spectacle in which the ordinary becomes fantastic. In this piece, Wade addresses the relationship of collective struggle and mutual support, working with kinetic and ritual sculptures as well as images taken from nature and the animal world. How can an audience’s physical empathy be increased? How can sharing an experience ease the effort?

Wade prepares the space with a collective warm-up exercise for the second part. In the trio of Florentina Holzinger, Ligia Manuela Lewis, and Rodrigo Sobarzo internal and external images collide. The performer’s bodies become the scene of shifting expressions and states of consciousness. Constraints and liberation, fear and relief result in poses that turn their bodies into an irritating picture puzzle of daily life. The bodies become blurry, transitory and associative, moving around in a hallucinatory vision of sounds, word fragments, and imaginary geometry.

“Fountain/To the Mountain” is the result of a six-month research period entitled “Identity & Transgression”. In an exchange with several artists, Wade explored different constellations, mechanisms, and visions of the body in dance.
The physical experience of the self, transforming body images and searching the shape of a group collective come together in “Fountain/To the Mountain” as a playful reflection on the role of the audience in theater. How can a contemporary understanding of empathy form the basis of a revision of the community?

Innovativer Live-Künstler, fesselnder DJ, kompromissloser
Produzent, Sound-& Maschinenfrickler.

INFO After the success with HTRK and Bruises (thank you!) we return on...

INFO

After the success with HTRK and Bruises (thank you!) we return on December with more audio agGression and death defying bass. We are proud to present the warriors of the evening:

Ancient Methods – There’s a primal punch to the industrial techno sounds of Ancient Methods. Their records sounds like gigantic machines, made of flesh and wood and metal, is roaming across the land, devouring everything in site and spewing out angry funk at the other end. The result is a surprisingly subtle kick in the gut that we are dying to see live.
https://www.facebook.com/ancientmethods1
Sun Worship – For all the severity of the fast paced assault of Sun Worship, they also create a spacious and strangely pretty atmosphere with their music. For being a band that only have two songs on Bandcamp and a casette out, they combine brutality and beauty in a way that surpasses a lot of their more experienced colleagues – both in skill and energy. Neukoelln Black Metal, bring it on! http://sunworship.bandcamp.com/album/sun-worship

NITE TURNS 2 DAY
a night of slick hip hop, neue r&b and cutting edge jazz for those that don’t sleep until after the sun’s up

MAIN ACT: GRAND PIANORAMAX

Grand Pianoramax (NYC/Berlin/Zürich) 100% live, raw and to the gut. A twilight of moody piano and timeless spoken word. Concieved by LEO TARDIN (winner of International Piano Solo Competition at Montreux Jazz Festival) and fronted by Brooklyn bred, poet/producer BLACK CRACKER with the thunderous DOM BURKHALTER on the drums. They will be previewing brand new material recently created this fall in Berlin in collaboration with Black Cracker.

Black Cracker is a two-time National Poetry Slam Champion who was named one of the twelve most fascinating NYC poets by UTOLD magazine and “best local poet” by the NYPress. As a producer/solo act XLR8R describes Cracker’s sound as “Joanna Newsom rolling around in a dumpster with a MPC instead of a harp.”

OPENING: SCHWARZ DONT CRACK

NISENNENMONDAI (Japan)

Described by allmusic´s Heather Phares as “taking as much inspiration from the cool kids at school as they did from experimentalists like This Heat, Pop Group, Sonic Youth, DNA and Neu! ” Nisennenmondai compose raw and repetitive (post) punk instrumentals which can be groove-oriented whilst also having a no wave disco vibe. Himeno tirelessly pounds at her snare and bass drum while slashing her cymbals, while Takada adds layers of delay and clangy sounding distortion.

“With walls of distortion and a pummeling rhythmic backbone that fluctuates between krautrock`s repetition and free-rock calamity, bassist Zai, guitarist Ma-Chan and drummer Hime have formed an unassuming juggernaut” (Dazed Confused)

Prefuse 73 said in an interview with Dazed Confused “John Stanier from Battles had told me that they were sick. They start to play. Next thing you know, these three tiny diminutive women were making us look like idiots because they were so incredible “.

ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER (US)

Oneohtrix Point Never is Daniel Lopatin, a US native whose work has brought him to the forefront of the modern electronic composition scene. Though Lopatin’s rise felt meteoric following his 2009 double-disc anthology ‘Rifts’ and its 2010 follow-up ‘Returnal’, (praised by the likes of Wire, Pitchfork, Fader, Guardian UK, The Quietus, and XLR8R) his love of polyphonic synthesizers dates back to childhood jam sessions with his father’s Roland Juno-60, an instrument which, like B.B. King’s ‘Lucille’, he has never left behind.

‘Replica’, his latest effort, is an electronic song cycle based around lo-fi audio procured from television advertisement compilations. These sample-based meditations are as lyrical as they are ecological, featuring re-purposed “ghost vocals” which serve as narration for Lopatin’s signature amorphous, ambient passages. Lopatin’s commitment to his Juno-60 is still on display, but the placid, synthetic surroundings of ‘Returnal’ are accelerated via darker, propulsive terrains using samplers, analogue filtering, tape manipulation, acoustic piano, plate reverb and sub-frequencies. In his own words, ““Replica has as much to do with environmental, broadcasted, and club sounds as it does with more direct musical influences.” The result is a heightened sense of music as part and parcel of an overall sonic landscape.

CHRIS CORSANO /w CLAYTON THOMAS (US)

First spellbound by free improvised music in the mid 1990s after witnessing performances by TEST, William Parker, Cecil Taylor and others, Chris Corsano began a long-standing, high-energy partnership with Paul Flaherty in 1998. A move from western Massachusetts, USA to the UK in 2005 led Corsano to develop an expanded solo music of his own, incorporating sax reeds, violin strings and bows, pot lids, adhesive tape and other household devices into his drum kit. In February 2006 he released his first solo recording, The Young Cricketer and toured extensively throughout Europe, USA and Japan. 2007 and ’08 were spent as the drummer on Björk’s Volta world tour. Returning back to the U.S. in 2009, Corsano shifted focus back to his own projects, most notably a duo with Michael Flower, Rangda (with Sir Richard Bishop and Ben Chasny) and solo work, now revamped to include synthesizers and contact microphones in addition to his drum set and home-made acoustic instruments.

Learn how to uncover implicit structure of any text and identify its key themes using network analysis.

In this workshop hosted by Dmitry Paranyushkin from Nodus Labs we will demonstrate a novel method for text network analysis using Gephi graph visualization software. Unlike other topic modelling methods (latent semantic network analysis, LDA) our approach takes into account the structural properties of text network in order to identify the clusters for meaning circulation and the most influential concepts within the text. You will learn how to create graph network representations of texts and perform their comparative quantitive and qualitative analysis. The method can be especially useful for quick text summarization and group sentiment profiling.

If you’d like to participate, please, send us a short text (200 to 300 words) to info [at] noduslabs [point] com describing your interests and current occupations. We will create text graphs both for participants and the whole group and see how they relate to one another (see the image attached). This may also be useful for you to meet other like-minded individuals at betahaus or find the people who could complement your cognitive map with their knowledge.

The most interesting hip-hop live for the first time in Berlin.

As part of PLAYBerlin live sessions we are bringing Shabazz Palaces for the first time in Berlin. They will be supported by Infinite Livez.

SHABAZZ PALACES (US)
www.myspace.com/shabazzpalacesmusic

Their music is a diverse mix of influences, rhythms and sudden BPM shifts completely redefining the hip-hop genre, bringing it in sync with the second decade of the XXI century. The best way to describe it is to imagine what would happen if Bedouins herded beats instead of goats somewhere in Seattle instead of the Atlas Mountains.

„So it seems to be a contemporary move and a clever reminder of long told stories. Repackaged and relayered down to the roots of the tribe of shabazz. And it’s the question of guidance which is brought up against the cleverness of our scientific now. The questions haven’t changed. Black up pluto while the mad scientists are busy mining historical skies. It’s layered. And you have to be a forward thinker to rearrange the digable planets of former times.”

A workshop and movement technique class in Berlin by Imre Thormann.

Imre Thormann is doing a workshop in Berlin in Noguchi Taiso from 30 July until 5 August. It’s an amazing movement practice originating from Japan, which explores relationships within the body using natural principles (gravity, spiral, wave, emotion etc.) In Noguchi Taiso every movement originates from the ground and gradually happens by itself after traveling through your whole body. This way you have the choice to move in a much more relaxed and powerful way, as well as leave more space and time within each impulse for emotional expression.

Starting from exploring everyday movements like walking and standing you will gradually shift to appreciating all the subtle vibrations within your body, opening up the new possibilities and finding out easier ways to move. This workshop is suitable for everyone, both amateurs and professionals, dancers, actors, business people, cleaning ladies, and anyone who wants to explore the beauty of body gravity repercussions.

To book your space, please, contact us or Imre Thormann directly on imre@bodytaster.com

The price is €260 / €300 for 7 full days, 7 hours a day (with 1 hour break). The workshop is taking place at Mica Moca, Lindower Str. 22, just next to S-bahn Wedding, daily from 11 am to 6 pm.

In Noguchi’s own words:

“The materials that constitute our body are undoubtedly of this Earth and have participated in and experienced the creation process of the Earth. Therefore our body, living here and now, includes the entirety of history of the Earth. What is called “live”, “body” and “mind” is precisely a phase of change and flow of the Earth. There is no absolute standard for all things.

Every standard comes into being within ourselves, freshly here and now, each time, relatively through relationships. Becoming aware of these relationships allows you to truly become one with original nature itself and you develop a clearer understanding of how your mind/body operates and a greater appreciation of the involvement of your thought process in all your physical acts.”

Imre Thormann, who will be leading the workshop, is a dancer and choreographer from Switzerland based in Berlin. He practised Taekwon Do, was a teacher in F.M. Alexander technique, practiced Butoh with Kazuo Ohno, and studied Noguchi Taiso with Michizou Noguchi in Japan.

photographs by Kandis Williams and Jen Osborne

INFO

Photographic works in ‘Iko Iko” showcase images that reveal a constructive light upon tragedy-affected communities within New Orleans, USA. Despite destructive natural and man-made disasters, there is a vibrant community and a strong will to celebrate inside a party culture grown from poverty and struggle that polarizes yet shapes a strong community.

Jen Osborne, a talent featured in the Musée de l’Élysée’s touring ReGeneration2 exhibition, shows photos from the electric shock of a music scene called Bounce. This hard, fast, call-and-response style of music that started in the projects now incorporates queer rappers such as Big Freedia, Katey Red and Sissy Nobby. While the movement was once dominated by straight men who spoke of sex for male audiences, a newer style of Bounce, commonly misnamed “Sissy Bounce”, now attracts women with eclectic style who spend the last of their scarce dollars to booty-shake alongside female-oriented lyrics in a queer-friendly party scene.

Kandis Williams, artist and Co-director of the Manhattan Art Program, illuminates another side of the New Orleans ward culture. The very guarded tradition of the Mardi Gras Indians grows out of almost mythical allegiances between Native Americans and slaves of New Orleans. Since the mid-19th century, Blacks have paid tribute to Indian assistance to runaway and freed slaves who were able to pass as Indians in order to prosper in New Orleans, by making Indian suits and parading them at Mardi Gras. Despite economic disadvantages, the costly suits are designed and fabricated every year and are a strong symbol of pride, heritage and craftsmanship within the Black community.

View these artists’ works at the opening on June 2nd, starting at 7pm, at Torstrasse Ninety-Five. Proceeds from print sales will be donated to the non-profit organization “The Porch” 7th Ward Cultural Organization and meeting point for several “Indian” tribes. For more information, please contact Kandis Williams at 016093379794.

Can one still be a Hegelian after the post-Hegelian break with traditional metaphysics...

Can one still be a Hegelian after the post-Hegelian break with traditional metaphysics which occurred more or less simultaneously in the works of Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard and Marx? After this break, is there not something inherently false in advocating a Hegelian “absolute Idealism”? Our wager is that the “official” post-Hegelian anti-philosophical break (Schopenhauer-Kierkegaard-Marx), although it presents itself as a break with idealism as embodied in its Hegelian climax, ignores the crucial dimension of Hegel’s thought, i.e., it ultimately amounts to a desperate attempt to go on thinking as if Hegel did not happen – the hole of this absence of Hegel is, of course, filled in with the ridiculous caricature of Hegel the “absolute idealist” who “possessed absolute Knowledge”.watch?v=aR3vfHuOW38

ANBB is a joint project by BLIXA BARGELD who has been the frontman of Einstürzende Neubauten and icon of West-Berlin’s post punk scene. Artist and musician ALVA NOTO, also known as CARSTEN NICOLAI, spent his childhood in Chemnitz. In Berlin, after the Fall of the Wall, he established an aesthetic continuum between club and gallery, had a lasting effect on the techno culture primarily in Eastern Germany with hard, minimalist sounds, and has established himself for a long time now as a main protagonist of international importance. The album “Mimikry”, released in October last year, was a first promise that this surprising collaboration leads to exciting musical results.

datamatics [ver.2.0] is the second audiovisual concert in Ikeda’s datamatics series‚ an art project that explores the potential to perceive the invisible multi–substance of data that permeates our world. Using pure data as a source for sound and visuals, datamatics combines abstract and mimetic presentations of matter, time and space in a breathtakingly accomplished work. Projecting dynamic, computer-generated imagery – in pared down black and white with striking colour accents – Ikeda’s intense yet minimal graphic renderings of data progress through multiple dimensions. Ikeda creates a soundtrack that reflects the imagery through meticulous layering of sonic components, producing immense and apparently boundless acoustic spaces. The technical dynamics of the piece, such as its extremely fast frame rates and variable bit depths, continue to challenge and explore the thresholds of our perceptions.watch?v=6eqGuZwELcM
