Step 2 – City Transport
After you arrived in the city, you might want to explore it a little bit. For that Berlin provides a very good city transport system. You have a few possibilities:
You can take a U-Bahn
, which is basically the Berlin undergound / tube, a S-Bahn (city train)
, which is supposed to be the fastest choice for bigger distances. For the center and the night it may be the most convenient to take Bus
or Metro Tram
.
!IMPORTANT!
During the Week the U and S-Bahn stop running around 12:30 am. But then there are lots of nightbuses. But on the weekend, that means Friday and Saturday, the tubes are running 24 hours.
To find out more go to the BVG website, where you can also find a tube or city map.
Tickets and prices
Berlin has defined tariff areas. The Berlin tariff area is subdivided into zones A, B and C.
Zone A: Berlin’s inner city up to and including the S-Bahn ring
Zone B: outside the S-Bahn ring up to the city boundary
Zone C: Greater Berlin (area approx. 15 km around Land Berlin), including the City of Potsdam
The most common tickets are:

Taxi / Cab
In Berlin you have the possibility to take a “Kurzstrecke” (short trip) in a cab. It is a 2 km journey for 3,50 Euro. After that the counter of the cab starts counting normally and then it gets expensive, so make sure, if you take a “Kurzstrecke”, that you tell the driver to stop after the 2 km are over. It’s a good opportunity if you want to check out a few places which are close by.
