Music Documentary on Jamaican Music

INFO

Deep Roots Music includes footage of performances by Lee Perry, the Skatelites, U Roy, 80′s Dancehall parties, verrrryy pissed skankers, as well as interviews with cultural historians, folklorists and musicologists.

Deep Roots Music offers a detailed examination of the history of Jamaican music traced from the early transported slaves, through the religious cult groups in Jamaica to the birth of the popular music, the Ska. Influencing and educating are the voices of both the people who created the music and those who were involved in the early days of Mento, Ska, Rock Steady and the sound systems, like the Skatalites and Duke Reid, toasters such as Count Machouki and Big Youth; record producers like Harry J; and the great Reggae artists of the day such as Dennis Brown, U Roy and Black Kush.

Deep Roots Music provides a remarkable history of a popular music form that is more than music.
(quoted from the O Tannenbaum Newsletter)

Open call for performers, artists, and musicians to create an online issue of TAMTAMTAM for PLAYBerlin.

For the 4th edition of our residency at Direktorenhaus we decided to go virtual. While the rest of the city is going through Art Forum we thought it would be interesting to have our own forum related to arts.

The idea is that on the 9th of October we invite everyone who is willing to participate in one giant work-sharing session. Before Saturday afternoon you can send us something from your practice that you would like to showcase: text, video, images, yourself – or all of that at once.

If your contribution makes it through the bayesian filter, it will be featured in the new TAMTAMTAM 12 online issue on PLAYBerlin.Com

We will also ask you to attend our live work-sharing salon session on the 9th of October at an yet undisclosed location.

It’s a great way to put together something you’re busy with at the moment, showcase your work, and meet like-minded individuals both virtually and actually. It’s also a possibility to do something together in the future TAMTAMTAM events.

If you’re interested, please, send your submissions to info [[at]] playberlin [[dot]] com before the 9th of October.

“Those star-gazing happy-timers at PLAYBerlin have come up trumps with a Sci-Fi spookathon headlined by Joe Howe’s latest project “Ben Butler & Mousepad.” The energy wielded from of his decrepit collection of synthesizers could likely beam you up to the higher echelons of Alte Kindl Brauerei, while jaunty riffs and bouncing beats cause unwitting flashbacks to megadrive soundtracks and early ‘90s school science video introduction music.

Support comes from O Tannenbaum DJs, Isabel & Josep and Johannes & DeeMeeTree.”

“Direktorenhaus’ current theater-group-in-residence TamTamTam puts on interactive, multimedia performances, films and workshops which attempt to change the way participants think about the feelings and events they experience (a tall order!). Direktorenhaus also asked the group to make another world. Its answer? “We will do what we can, having only what you can want. Our hands are stretching out to look for somewhere to rest among our own immaterial archives so that we can draw out what they fall upon into the solidifying waves of occurrence until we are newly surrounded by such quick crystals.” Sounds deep… TamTamTam will also be in the Haus on September 17 and 23, and October 21 and 30.”

Direktorenhaus Gallery
