ABOUT

What has been a former cemetery chapel became now a very interesting music, performance and theater space in the heart of the Berlin area of Friedrichshain. Next to the highly cultural program the space still hosts a few more sacred events. And their souls are still dancing.

The venue has a nice cosy basement which fits about 100 people and which is possible to rent.

film maker / director / visual artist

About

Nat Munari aka Nathaniel Fowler is an audio/video artist in Berlin. He hails from Baltimore and plays in the synthesized monster named Unlimited Heroine and the band called Oxes. He is currently editing a feature documentary, shooting music videos, and collaborating with other peeps. He has been a collaborator on various TamTamTam and PLAYberlin events, capturing the keymoments of occurences.

About his current work

“Instead of approaching the “remix” as a danceable reinterpretation of an original track, I work with the connexion that a popular image has with its audio, as if they are one inseperable entity apart from the pop song product. Music Videos have become the status-quo format for discovering and consuming pop music. In a sense, music has become inseperable from the image, forming a symbiosis. No longer are songs made and preserved by their pure musical content. Particularly with commercial pop hits, the association of the moving image with the original audio creates the “success” and dictates its longevity. No longer are hits made and preserved by their pure musical content.

I dissect this correlation into small pieces (like a samplist would use pieces of a song) and create a new audio/video work by using the music video, not the music, as the source. All video that appears is accompanied by its original audio, and thusly all audio is accompanied by its original video.

__________________________

These new works play with the tension of rhythm based music versus how rhythm is portrayed in music videos; the video cuts are determined by fractions of beats within the music. This does not always coincide with a natural cut in the video. By searching for the moments in which new connexions can be made, moments of the collision between the rhythmic cut and the image cut, I develop a new story using the results.”Nat Munari Lady Gaga excerptNat Munari excerpt 2Nat Munari lady gaga bad romance video excerpt

Music Videos

The story behind the unfinished music Video for Gang Gang Dance

Mr Munari / Fowler:
“Funny what a year does to technology. I spent 4 days on preliminary work, keying and modelling, before preparing to dive into a month of handcrafting a quartz composer scene that would intentionally put errors into the compressed video I was working with. The band decided they didnt want a video so I stopped after 4 days. 6 months later Kanye West comes out with Welcome to Heartbreak, making any original idea I had redundant. 4 months later, somebody’s made a QC plugin and my month’s work is done in literally 5 minutes. Thanks to the “datamoshing” trend and the video artist bangnoise, I can lazily say “yeah, this is what i meant to do. see? Thanks for not trusting in my vision.”

The video excerpt also features our dear friends and collaborators Drew Kaiser and Ligia Manuela Lewis

Open call for performers, artists, and musicians to create an online issue of TAMTAMTAM for PLAYBerlin.

For the 4th edition of our residency at Direktorenhaus we decided to go virtual. While the rest of the city is going through Art Forum we thought it would be interesting to have our own forum related to arts.

The idea is that on the 9th of October we invite everyone who is willing to participate in one giant work-sharing session. Before Saturday afternoon you can send us something from your practice that you would like to showcase: text, video, images, yourself – or all of that at once.

If your contribution makes it through the bayesian filter, it will be featured in the new TAMTAMTAM 12 online issue on PLAYBerlin.Com

We will also ask you to attend our live work-sharing salon session on the 9th of October at an yet undisclosed location.

It’s a great way to put together something you’re busy with at the moment, showcase your work, and meet like-minded individuals both virtually and actually. It’s also a possibility to do something together in the future TAMTAMTAM events.

If you’re interested, please, send your submissions to info [[at]] playberlin [[dot]] com before the 9th of October.

Donald Wysoski built his 127th machine that managed to get a marble ball into a hat following a complex route of random associations, physical laws, magical manipulations and divine powers (watch the video on the right).

Matthew Appleby built an amazing “Weather Machine” that produced wind, water, plants and the nature itself

Team Plastique performed a mini experimental show and recreated an amazing tropical landscape in Direktorenhaus’ corridor.

Dmitry Paranyushkin invited people to join him in making “Life Skills” videos where people share their most essential knowledge in a very comprehensive, yet concise way.

Eric Green, Jessica Taylor and Diego Agullo led a dance class in the hallway featuring some of the best Michael Jackson’s moves.

Andreas Stolber did a permanent concert inviting people to take part in his circuit-bending game.

DJs SWADANSI and Kandis Williams played the finest tunes and kept people dancing forever.

We also presented the new PLAYBerlin website and nice Spanish food was served by our friends for the guests.

A two-month residency at Direktorenhaus.

TAMTAMTAM Residency at Direktorenhaus

We would like to invite you to join TAMTAMTAM for our residency at Direktorenhaus in Berlin. For two months we will be experimenting in playing, interacting, making things, disrupting the interfaces, learning, cheating, partying, dancing, solidifying waves of occurence, being surrounded by quick crystals, sleeping, and eating together.

At the first event, on Friday, 10th of September, we occupied 8 rooms with 8 ways of having an idea. We all received tasks and spatially distributed proposals to give some initial friction necessary to start the movement. Together with our guests we generated ideas about how to reside in Direktorenhaus during the next two months.
